Lesson 9: Painting Clay Sculptures

Overview

We will paint sculptures one solid color. Students will be able to use large and small brushes to paint their sculptures.

  • Clay sculptures
  • Metallic paints in cups
  • Water in cups
  • Large and small brushes
  • Sponges

Activities

Step 1

Discuss how color can change a sculpture.

Step 2

Introduce metallic paints. Demonstrate how to paint the clay. Show how to cover the clay completely but be careful not to hide details.

Step 3

Have students paint their sculptures.

  • How did painting your sculpture with metallic paints change its appearance compared to the unpainted clay?
  • What techniques did you use to ensure that the paint covered the clay evenly and smoothly?
