Overview
We will continue to work on our clay animals, adding shapes and creating a pose. Students will be able to identify ways to refine the shapes of their sculpture and add additional parts to make it look more like their chosen animal. Students will be able to identify and create a pose for their animal.
Materials
- Sculptures created previously
- Foam trays
- Clay tools
- Damp sponges
- Plastic forks
- Resources: animal photos and Terracotta zoomorphic askos (vessel) with antlers from the Met collection
Activities
Step 1
Look closely at clay sculptures from previous lesson and images of animals. Ask students for suggestions about what to add to the sculpture. Brainstorm poses as a group.
Step 2
Demonstrate carving away areas and adding pieces. Show how to bend the sculpture into a specific pose.
Step 3
Have students continue to work on their sculptures and create a pose.
Reflection
Read aloud The Three Little Pigs.
Think about a story involving our clay imaginary pets.
Writing Prompt (Optional):
Students will use sentence starters and writing prompts to work on a paragraph of text about their imaginary pets.
