Lesson 3: Making Paper Clay Puppet Heads

Overview

We will make a paper clay head for a puppet, exploring physical traits. Students will be able to use paper clay to create a three-dimensional head for a puppet.

Materials

  • Ebony pencils
  • White drawing paper – 9 x 12″
  • Paper clay or clay

Activities

Step 1

Have students use their five senses to explore the medium of paper clay.

Step 2

Demonstrate how to use paper clay, pinching and pulling and smoothing the clay.

Step 3

Have students create a head for their puppet.

Step 4

Save puppet heads in bags to continue next week.

Reflection

Students will talk about their character and create a story about them, using the following prompts:

What is your character’s name? 
What is your character feeling? 
What is the background or setting for your story?
What is the problem your character is facing and how are they solving their problem?

Students will create a summary that outlines their character, the setting, and the problem and solution the character faces, using the following prompts:

The solution is…

Sketchbook Prompt (optional):

Draw your character in your sketchbook. Make sure to include a setting for your story.
