Lesson 3: Creating the Armature

Overview

Students will be able to change cardboard and/or newspapers by crumpling, folding, or cutting to create exaggerated features.

  • Cardboard shapes
  • Newspaper
  • Masking tape
  • Scissors

Activities

Step 1

Discuss puppet characters and ask students to brainstorm features. Students can use the sketches from Lesson #1 if needed.

Step 2

Explore and demonstrate different ways to change cardboard and newspaper. Have students suggest different ways these techniques could be used to create the features of their puppet.

Step 3

Have students create features for their puppet and attach with tape.

Reflection

Students will use a predetermined list of adjectives and traits (word bank) to describe their character.

Writing Prompt (Optional):
Students will fill out a graphic organizer describing the external and internal traits of their character.
