Overview
We will make painted paper to show the color, pattern, and texture of a chosen animal, as well as habitat details. Students will be able to create the color, pattern, and texture of a chosen animal using paint and special tools.
Materials
- 3 colored papers per student
- Tempera paint
- Large paintbrushes
- Water in containers
- Sponges
- Combs to create texture
- Resource: color photos of animals
Activities
Step 1
Show and discuss animal colors, patterns, and textures.
Step 2
Show how combs and other tools create different textures and patterns.
Step 3
Have students explore painting tools, then make painted paper for their animal’s body, details, and habitat.
Reflection
Students will talk and write about how they painted their paper.
Describe a pattern that you created. How did you make this pattern?
Describe a texture that you created. How did you make this texture? What tools did you use?
Sketchbook Prompt (Optional):
Think about your animal drawing from last class.
What is your animal doing in your drawing? Is it standing, walking, or running? Is it swimming, hunting, or sleeping?
How can you change the shapes of your animal’s body to show it doing a different activity?
Draw your animal again, this time doing something new.
