Texture

Matsumura Keibun. Kinkadō’s Album of Drawings by Keibun. 1898, Woodblock printed book; ink and color on paper, 9 15/16 x 7 1/16 in. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

Texture invites us to explore the look and feel of different surfaces. Our lessons and activities about texture guide young learners in discovering physical textures through sensory exploration and help older students develop techniques for creating visual texture in their art.

Texture Collage
In this Pre-K and Kindergarten activity, children will use their senses to explore different textured papers and use them to make a collage.

Feel This, Mark That
What does “feeling” mean to you? We can feel the texture of something, like when an object is bumpy or smooth. We also feel emotions, like happiness or sadness. In this drawing activity, we’ll explore both!

Texture
Imagine looking at an object’s surface through a microscope! How can you capture all the tiny details you observe in its texture? In this lesson, you’ll translate the object’s texture into marks and lines, bringing its surface to life on paper.

Creating Marks and Visual Texture
In this lesson, you’ll explore the textures of natural objects, learning to create visual textures through marks, lines, and patterns.
