Overview
In this activity, children will explore stamping with different objects and see what shapes they make. Children can use the stamps to make a transportation vehicle.
Materials
- Corrugated cardboard pieces
- Cardboard tubes, spools, cork, and/or straw
- Black or blue tempera paint on a plate or tray
- 2 pieces of paper to stamp on
Activities
First, let’s look at the different objects that you have.
- What do you notice about them?
- What shapes do you think they will make?
How can we use these objects as stamps?
- Try holding a piece of cardboard with one hand and dip the thin side in the paint. Then, press it down on the paper. What did it make? It made a straight line!
- What happens if you keep going?
Try another stamp. Gently dip it in the paint, then press it on the paper.
What shape did it make?
Try out all the different stamps that you have.
- Where did you stamp them on your paper?
- Take out your second paper. Do you want to use your stamps to make a vehicle, like a bus or train?
- What shape will you make for the largest shape of the vehicle? What stamp will you use?
- Does your vehicle have wheels? What stamp will you use for these? Where will you add them?
- What else will you add with your stamps? (windows, doors, etc.)
Reflection
Let’s look at what you made!
- What stamps did you use?
- What shape did each stamp make?
