Activities
Step 1
Revisit mural and decide what else is needed.
Step 2
Divide class into groups of 3-5 students.
Step 3
Have one group use oil pastels to draw a horizon line on the background and add color for the ocean, sky, clouds, etc. Have other groups continue to create collage features and details for habitat. Rotate groups so that everyone gets a chance to work on each part.
Reflection
Students will talk and write about the mural background and where they will add their animal.
What animal did you make?
What will your animal be doing in the mural—running, swimming, eating?
Where will you place your animal on the background?
Sketchbook Prompt (Optional):
Draw your animal in your sketchbook in a pose that shows what it is doing.
Write about what your animal would do next.
Draw that next action.
For example, if your animal is jumping out of the water, it might next dive back under the water and swim away.
