Lesson 5: Collaging Habitat Features and Details

Overview

We will create small collages of individual landscape features—plants, rocks, seaweed, etc. Students will be able to create details for their animal habitat, including water, sky, plants, rocks, caves, and so on.

Materials

  • Painted paper
  • Colored paper
  • Black paper – 9 x 12” (base for features)
  • Scissors
  • Glue 
  • Large paper cut to desired size for habitat background
  • Resource: color photos of habitat and individual plants and features

Activities

Step 1

Look at full habitat images, then individual feature images.

Step 2

Show habitat background and discuss how features and animals will be added.

Step 3

Have students cut, arrange, and glue to make small collages of features.

Reflection

Students will talk about their habitat feature collages.

What features did you make for the habitat?
How did you make them?
What else do you think the habitat background will need?

Write a sentence or list your ideas.
