Lesson 5: Coating with Gesso

Overview

We will use gesso to cover our sculptures in preparation to paint. Students will understand the properties of gesso and be able to use a paintbrush to apply it to their sculptures.

Activities

Step 1

Discuss how gesso seals a surface and creates a neutral color base.

Step 2

Demonstrate coating armature in an even gesso coat.

Step 3

Have students coat their armatures and let dry.

Reflection

The class will discuss the steps they followed to make their paper mâché puppets.

Writing Prompt (Optional):

Students will write out the steps they used to make their paper mâché puppets.

Sketchbook Prompt (Optional):

Students will draw out the steps they used to make their paper mâché puppets.
