Are you looking for fresh approaches to teaching portraiture in your classroom? Do you want to make the most of the materials you already have?
In this hands-on workshop, you will learn creative approaches to teaching collage portraiture across grade levels. We will introduce ways to help students successfully cut complex facial shapes, depict a variety of hair textures and styles, and create portraits that reflect personal choice and expression
Throughout the workshop, we’ll emphasize the joy of self-expression, artistic exploration, and inclusive strategies to engage all students in your class.

About the Workshop
This in-person professional development workshop is designed for art educators working in a variety of settings. Led by a team of professional artists and art educators, the session will focus on hands-on art-making experiences.
You’ll have the opportunity to connect with a community of like-minded educators who are passionate about bringing fresh ideas into the art classroom. You’ll leave ready to implement this unit in your own classroom.

CTLE Hours

William Waitzman
William Waitzman is a printmaker, painter, and teaching artist. His illustrations have appeared in The New Yorker, The New York Times, and many other publications. He currently works with first to fifth graders at a public school in the Bronx as an artist instructor for Studio in a School.

Nicola Giardina
Nicola Giardina is the Director of Teaching and Learning at Studio in a School. Prior to joining Studio, she led educator programs at the Brooklyn Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Nicola is the author of The More We Look, the Deeper It Gets: Transforming the Curriculum Through Art (Rowman and Littlefield, 2018).
